SANs have been deployed to reduce management costs and increase storage utilization. With all the focus on controlling these storage ownership costs, SAN performance needs have largely gone un-resolved. One reason is that the complexity of understanding performance and uncovering bottlenecks is greatly magnified by the very resource sharing that makes a SAN attractive in the first place. See the Flash presentation for a better visual.

High profile application performance problems tend to be more visible and are commonly tied to an individual application or server. A fix is applied to this single environment and little more effort if any may be spent looking for other performance bottlenecks in the SAN.

Justifying a SANaccelerator in response to solving the "big" applications' performance needs enables users to effectively leverage the SANaccelerator performance pool to accelerate other applications.  In essence, they get the same kind of performance enhancement virtually for free. This concept of leverage in the SANaccelerator across multiple platforms, architectures, and application requirements delivers a strong value proposition that truly benefits the entire organization.
